Hurricane Florence to bring floods of ‘BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS’ to Carolinas

The powerful hurricane is currently barrelling through the Atlantic Ocean where it is gaining momentum and strength as it heads for southeast United States.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says the storm is currently a Category 4 strength – the second highest – and will pick up traction as it gets to mainland.

States of emergency have already been declared in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia and more are likely to follow before it reaches land on Thursday.

The eye of the storm is expected to hit Wilmington, North Carolina with wind speeds of up to 150mph predicted.

WeatherBELL meteorologist Joe Bastardi told CBN News Florence’s damage will be comparable to 1954’s Hurricane Hazel – which killed 1,100 people – and 1989’s Hurricane Hugo – which killed 60 people but caused more than £6.9billion ($9bn) across the Americas and Caribbean.

Mr Bastardi said: “Those are the benchmark storms on the Carolina coastline, strong Category 4 hurricanes, but the difference with this is it’s not going to move fast.

“It’s going to go inland, sit over the southern Appalachians and lead to 3-4 feet of rain, in parts of South Carolina, North Carolina, perhaps even into southwest Virginia.

“So when this is all said and done this is probably going to be the costliest storm in the history of the Carolinas because not only are you dealing with a major hurricane hit, but you’re dealing with flooding of biblical proportions.”

The situation is set to get worse before it gets better, with experts predicting it will build to a Category 5 storm – the strongest possible – in the coming days.

Dr Ventricle, who has a PhD in Tropical Meteorology, expressed his concern surrounding the hurricane, stating: “The weather model just keeps getting worse for the Carolinas.

“Based off recent intensity adjustments, we are now seeing the potential for major Hurricane Florence to achieve a Category 5 intensity prior to landfalling across the Carolinas.

“If correct, devastating news.”

A Category 5 hurricane has wind speeds of 157mph or faster.

According to the National Hurricane Center, when a Category 5 hurricane hits “a high percentage of framed homes will be destroyed, with total roof failure and wall collapse”.

Its description adds: “Power outages will last for weeks to possibly months.

“Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months.”
