Novak Djokovic sends message to Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer with dominant US Open win

Djokovic was at his defiant best as he withstood the breathtaking shot-making from Juan Martin Del Potro over three pulsating sets.

The Serbian did not play his best tennis but the quality of his returning regularly gave Del Potro problems on serve.

With 80 per cent of returns in play, Djokovic’s depth and accuracy was impeccable.

And with 53 errors coming from the Argentine’s forehand, the 2009 US Open was unable to make the most of his chances.

With victory at Wimbledon in July and now the US Open, Djokovic has the strongest claim to be the best player in the world.

And his performances over the past few months will be an ominous warning to Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and the rest of men’s tennis.

Djokovic said: “I think winning a slam, any slam, gives you huge confidence that you carry with you for a certain period of time.

“Obviously tough thing about our schedule is that we have Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and US Open condensed within four or five months.

“At the same time, good thing about it is if you win Wimbledon or French, then you have another slam, and you can thrive on that confidence level that you got from winning the previous slam.

“So maybe that’s one of the reasons why I’ve managed to do so well after winning Wimbledon and doing so well here in New York.”

This was Djokovic’s third US Open title and the 14th Grand Slam of his career.

It puts him level with Pete Sampras in the all-time list and the 31-year-old spoke openly about how much it means to equal his idol.

He said: “Pete Sampras is one of the biggest legends ever to play the game.

“He was my childhood idol. He was someone I was looking up to.

“The first actual thing I saw related to tennis on the TV was his first or second Wimbledon championship. That inspired me to start playing tennis.

“There is a lot of significance of me being now shoulder to shoulder in terms of Grand Slam wins with him.

“It’s truly incredible when you think about it. I watched him win one of his first Wimbledon championships, and I grew up playing and thinking that one day I’ll be able to do what he does.

“To actually be here, it’s a dream come true.”

At the end of the match, an emotional Del Potro was consoled by Djokovic.

It was Del Potro’s first Grand Slam final since he won the US Open in 2009 largely due to multiple surgeries on his wrist.

But with those concerns now largely gone he is highly motivated to win titles and make up for lost time.

He said: “My wrist is responding good, because I’ve been playing a lot of matches in these two weeks.

“I feel good with my two-handed backhands, as well. I will keep playing tennis for a few more years.

“I don’t know when will be my last tournament in this career, but I’m excited to keep surprising myself doing things like this.

“I’m very motivated to keep trying to win these titles.”
