Serena Williams tells fans to stop booing amid US Open final coaching controversy

Williams was involved in controversy during the straight sets defeat as she was handed a code violation for coaching.

The American fumed at the umpire, saying: “I don’t cheat to win. I’d rather lose.”

Later in the set, Williams smashed her racket on the court and received another violation, meaning a point penalty.

But it wasn’t over there. Just moments later, Williams called chair umpire Carlos Ramos a ‘thief’ and was handed a game violation as Osaka prevailed 6-2, 6-4.

Williams then remonstrated with the court supervisor with the American ranting: “This has happened to me before. This is not fair. There are a lot of men out here who have said a lot of things and do not get that punishment.

“Because I am a woman you are going to take this away from me? That is not right.”

The start of the trophy presentation was marred by the crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium booing as the home hope was denied her 24th Grand Slam title.

But the 36-year-old, who last won the US Open in 2014, told the crowd to stop their booing.

“I don’t want to be rude,” Williams said.

“I don’t want to do questions. Naomi played well. This is her first Grand Slam!

“I know you guys were here rooting but lets make this the best moment we can. Lets give everyone the credit where credit is due.

“Lets not boo anymore. Congratulations Naomi! No more booing! Thank you to my team, you guys are amazing.

“This crowd is the best in the world. Thank you so much. I really hope I can continue to go and play here again. I will see.

“It has been a tough year for me but thank you so much.”

Osaka was visibly upset despite winning her first Grand Slam at the age of 20.

She said: “I know everyone was cheering for her and I am sorry it has to end like this.”
