‘Irexit means FREEDOM’ New party calling for Ireland to leave EU launches TODAY

The Irexit Freedom party, inspired by the UK’s Brexit vote, will be launched at an event in the Irish capital this afternoon.

The anti-EU party hopes to field candidates in next year’s European Parliament elections and Ireland’s general election in 2021.

Hermann Kelly, the party’s spokesman, compared the EU to a “colonial master” as he urged Irish voters to back the new movement.

In an interview with Express.co.uk, he said: “The Irexit Freedom party stands for taking back control of Irish affairs.

“Like Brexit, we want to take back control of our money, our laws and our borders.

“We want Ireland to be a sovereign independent state outside the EU, as Britain will be when it leaves.

“Ireland is now a net contributor to the EU budget – Brussels takes a huge amount of wealth from our economy.

“The EU has become a colonial master which doesn’t stand up for our national interests. These people aren’t our friends.”

Mr Kelly also lashed out at the austerity measures imposed on Ireland during its Eurozone bailout programme.

He said: “In 2011 and 2012, the EU imposed a private German-Franco bank debt of £57bn (€64bn) on Irish taxpayers.

Ireland‘s economic policy is ruled by the troika of the European Commission, European Central Bank and IMF. That is absolutely scandalous.

“Ireland’s three main parties – Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein – are the new troika because they’re completely servile to the EU.

“They’re happy to stay in the euro, which is completely the wrong currency for Ireland and they’re happy to stay in the EU.”

Mr Kelly insisted the Irexit Freedom Party was not a “one-trick pony” and would unveil a raft of other policies.

He said the party was committed to cutting taxes, reducing government waste and tackling “incompetence and corruption”.

But he admitted its desire to see Ireland leave the EU was the party’s unique selling point.

He said: “We’re the first party to come along and back Irexit.

“Other parties may have been slightly critical of the EU in the past, but they never said: ‘We want to leave, we want our freedom back’.

“The Irish establishment is going to attack us like crazy, but Irexit is all about Ireland being free to prosper.

“By launching the party today, we’re planting a seed – I’m sure we will grow.”
