Real Madrid news: Zinedine Zidane talks Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema

Real Madrid gave Zidane the job in January 2016 with the club stuck in a rut under current Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez.

And the Frenchman worked wonders during his time at the Bernabeu, steering the club to the La Liga title and three consecutive Champions League crowns.

Zidane left Real Madrid back in May and would be joined out of the exit door by Ronaldo two months later who, after nine successful years in La Liga, chose to leave for Juventus.

Real’s dressing room, often full of egos, came together under Zidane to great effect.

Ramos, the club captain, was on side from the beginning having previously caused ripples by clashing with Benitez and Jose Mourinho.

And Zidane has now praised the Spain international and Ronaldo for what they did for him.

He said: “Both are players with a lot of energy and influence within the squad.

“Sergio Ramos is a natural leader and a great presence in the dressing room, while Cristiano Ronaldo is a leader on the pitch that inspires his teammates.

“They complemented each other well.”

Zidane also praised compatriot Benzema.

The France international appears to be past his best, failing to sparkle as the club won the Champions League again last term.

Zidane always stuck by his man, though, controversially selling Alvaro Morata.

Morata had been seen as the club’s natural replacement for Benzema – a player in the mould of Raul – but was flogged to Chelsea a year ago.

Current Real boss Julen Loptegegui is a huge Benzema fan too.

And Zidane has now explained why he would would keep faith with the former Lyon hitman despite his troubles in front of goal.

“Karim was important for the balance of the team in terms of how he wanted the team to attack,” he said.

“Helping to implement our possession game by playing with his teammates, he’s a true team player.”
