Arsenal news: Lucas Torreira explains Unai Emery role in choosing Gunners transfer

Arsenal signed Torreira from Sampdoria back in July after the player enjoyed an impressive World Cup campaign.

So far, the Uruguay international has had to settle for a place in the bench with Emery often overlooking him in favour of the likes of Matteo Guendouzi and Granit Xhaka.

Arsenal managed to sign Torreira despite the midfielder also being tracked by clubs in Italy. Napoli were heavily linked prior to his move to north London.

And Torreira has now explained how Emery convinced him to chance his arm in English football.

The Arsenal star said: “Well, everything about Arsenal came out before the World Cup.

“When I was preparing to go to the World Cup with my country, with Uruguay, I received a call from the boss.

“I had already had a talk with my agent who told me about the idea of Arsenal, and I was very happy because when I was in Italy, I never imagined being able to come to the Premier League.

“There was rumours of many Italian teams, this ended up surprising me honestly, and when I received the call from the boss I was very happy.

“When I went to the World Cup, I knew that whatever happened I was going to sign for Arsenal.

“So I was with a calm head, free, and luckily I had a great World Cup with my country.”

Emery recently sent a message to Torreira, explaining how he can force his way into the Arsenal XI.

“He’s improving. He is getting to know his teammates,” Emery said.

“For me, all the minutes he is playing is important for his performance.

“He needs to continue working.

“But it’s very important for me to think about others players, Matteo has started well and Xhaka is very important.

“We need good players. Lucas is like that.”
