Arsenal news: Bernd Leno must be thinking THIS after Petr Cech performances – pundit

That’s the view of former Arsenal striker Ian Wright, who saw Cech struggle again although the Gunners beat Cardiff 3-2 on Sunday.

Leno signed for the north London club from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer for a fee of £20million.

But despite that fee, the Germany international is yet to start a Premier League game for Arsenal with Cech starting all four.

Arsenal have won just two of them, with Cech looking edgy as he tries to play from the back under new boss Unai Emery.

And Wright believes Leno will be sitting on the bench wondering just what Cech has to do before he gets an opportunity.

“Bernd Leno must be looking and thinking ‘When am I going to get a chance?’” Wright said on Match of the Day 2.

“Has he got to score an own goal for me to get in there, or what.”

Despite his lack of chances, Leno hasn’t been disheartened by his lack of first-team football and is more than willing to bide his time on the sidelines.

“I am convinced my move was the right decision,” Leno recently told Sport Bild when asked about his move to the Emirates.

“Arsenal paid a lot of money for me, I received a good welcome.”

He added: “I won’t get crazy over this [being on the bench]. It maybe takes a few weeks or months, but my time here will come. I’d love to play straight away.

“But I won’t lose my patience, the coach has shown me a clear plan and I believe in it.

“But sure: I always want to play and as soon as possible here.”

Leno may have to bide his time a little while longer yet though with Emery having vowed to keep playing out from the back through Cech despite the goalkeeper’s jitters.

“It is very important for me to continue doing this and improving,” Emery said.

“If you play every time long balls you lose personality. We take a little risk but when you break their pressing on the pitch you can find space.”
