
The Ferraris had shown the pace all weekend at Monza and locked out the front row in qualifying yesterday, with Kimi Raikkonen taking pole.
Hamilton had it all to do from third on the grid, but made a brave move on Vettel heading into turn four.
Neither driver wanted to give up the space and they collided with Vettel being sent into a spin while Hamilton marched on into second.
The Germain could be heard complaining on the radio: “That was silly, where did he want to go?”
The racing stewards chose against handing punishment to either driver though, labelling it a “racing incident”.

However, Vettel was still bemused as to why Hamilton decided to make the move when he did, calling it “ironic”.
“I think you have more angles than I have but I tried to pass Kimi and he opened the brakes and I didn’t have a gap,” Vettel told Sky Sports.
“Lewis saw the gap round the outside but he didn’t leave me any space.
“Then I was the one who spun around, which was ironic.
“It wasn’t too peachy but I recovered and got a lot of points.
“It doesn’t help when you lose points but it’s not the end of the world.
“We will all still wake up tomorrow morning.
“I’m down for the people. Their support is incredible. But you get spun round and there’s not much you can do.
“I’m not too worried. If we have the pace, it doesn’t take a long time to get the points gap down.”
Vettel now sits 30 points behind Hamilton in the driver’s standings with seven races remaining.
The Formula One circuit leaves Europe now with the Singapore Grand Prix next on the calendar in two week’s time.
