Apple AirPods could soon be given a huge upgrade to make them even better

Apple introduced AirPods back in September 2016 and delivered a truly wireless listening experience.

The buds came in a case that also acted as the primary method of charging.

And thanks to the W1 chip inside the product, it meant connecting them to an iPhone was incredibly easy.

But it appears a new version of the lauded product could be on the way if a new report is to be believed.

MacRumours recently cited from Blayne Curtis, an analyst with Barclays who claimed to have recently met with companies inside Apple’s supply chain, who insisted a second generation of AirPods could launch in the “fourth quarter” of next year.

Curtis added a new charging case will be introduced for AirPods this September that will allow the buds to receive juice wirelessly courtesy of Apple’s new AirPower mat.

Apple subtly announced a new case for AirPods last year when it showed off AirPower.

And on its website Apple currently has an image of an AirPods case charging on the forthcoming mat.

On the front of the device a coloured indicator can be seen that shows the status of charging.

The new case is presumed to launch alongside AirPower but it is currently unclear whether it will be included in future AirPods as standard or whether it will be an optional extra.

Although Curtis did not detail what the second generation of AirPods would introduce in terms of new features, a Bloomberg report earlier this year hinted Apple could make the next version water resistant.

Citing people “familiar with the matter”, the publication insisted Apple plans to make the next iteration of the headphones able to withstand “splashes of water and rain”.

However it admitted the next version of the popular headphones will not be capable of being dunked in water fully.

Bloomberg’s sources did admit plans from the American tech giant were subject to change.

It has also been rumoured the next generation of AirPods could tout “hey Siri” functionality.

This could allow users to summon the virtual assistant just by saying the command.

Such functionality could allow users to skip songs or ask questions on the fly using AirPods.

Despite claims from sources and analysts, the future of AirPods is currently unconfirmed.

However, it is likely Apple will show off AirPower in addition to a new charging case for the popular headphones at the firm’s recently announced hardware event on September 12.

Express.co.uk will be covering the exhibition live.
