Lewis Hamilton BOOED at Monza: Ferrari fans launch ferocious barrage after qualifying

Hamilton finished behind both Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen in qualifying this afternoon with the Ferrari fans ecstatic at the result.

The Italian Grand Prix is the home race for Ferrari but they haven’t won their since Fernando Alonso did so in 2010.

Hamilton has enjoyed unrivalled success there in the last four years, winning three Italian Grand Prix’s since 2014.

But the loyal home fans gave the Briton a heated welcome following the qualifying session.

With the top three drivers on the track being interviewed, both Raikkonen and Vettel received a fantastic reception.

However, when it came to Hamilton’s turn the tifosi ranked up the noise levels by booing his every word.

The four-time world champion received a similar reception at the 2017 Italian Grand Prix after his win.

Speaking on the podium, Hamilton was once again interrupted by boos from the crowd.

He took the reception in his stride back then, even toying with the Ferrari faithful.

“Mercedes power is definitely better than Ferrari power,” he said a year ago.

It seems as though Ferrari have the better race pace this year at Monza with Valtteri Bottas also struggling.

And Hamilton admits Mercedes have their work cut out to get ahead of the Ferraris in tomorrow’s race.

“It was a fantastic qualifying session. Congratulations to Kimi,” he said.

“They knew that had the pace this weekend.

“It was going to take something quite special with the lap to catch them but it’s generally been that kind of distance between them all weekend.

“Of course, we were hopeful that we might be able to give them a run for their money which, obviously the first qualifying lap was pretty good – but the second one was… it was still good but it could always be better.

“It was just amazing how intense it was – and that’s how racing should be. So, I really enjoyed it thoroughly, to be honest.”
