Italian Grand Prix qualifying results: Confirmed grid after penalties – Ricciardo 19th

Daniel Ricciardo will start from the back of the grid for tomorrow’s Italian Grand Prix after completely replacing the power unit in his Red Bull.

The Australian driver has had Renault’s Spec-3 engine fitted for the race in Monza, taking him over the season limit of new component parts.

Nico Hulkenberg will join Ricciardo on the back row after also taking a tactical engine change, having already received a 10-place grid penalty for causing a crash at the Belgian Grand Prix.

The Renault driver was deemed at fault for the huge first corner smash involving Fernando Alonso and Charles Leclerc last weekend and has opted to have a fresh power unit fitted in order to take the penalties in one go.

Ricciardo will start in 19th having been first on track in FP1, beating his 2019 Renault team-mate to the end of the pitlane.

The 29-year-old then experienced a loss of power from his new engine during the first session at Monza, but Red Bull rectified the problem in time for FP2.

Ricciardo’s current team-mate Max Verstappen is also expected to take new components this weekend but will not face a penalty as he has not yet exceeded his total allowance.

At the other end of the grid, with a stellar lap to pip Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel by just over a tenth of a second.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton was third ahead of Valtteri Bottas while Verstappen put his Red Bull in fifth.

Romain Grosjean and Carlos Sainz both impressed in Q3 and Lance Stroll caused a stir by getting his Williams up to 10th.

There was disappointment for McLaren with Fernando Alonso 13th and Stoffel Vandoorne slowest on track, while Sergio Perez was an early casualty as the Force India driver was knocked out in Q1.

Hamilton currently holds a 17-point lead over Sebastian Vettel in the drivers’ championship with eight races still to go.
