Fortnite update 5.40: HUGE change coming, High Stakes event, Getaway LTM, Revolver vaulted

early patch notes for update 5.40 have revealed big changes coming to Battle Royale on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, Android, iOS Mobile, PCs and Macs.

Fortnite fans should be getting update 5.40 on Tuesday which is likely to bring with it server downtime.

Epic Games throughout Fortnite season 5 have been rolling out major patches every fortnight on a Tuesday, with the next one due on September 4.

The previous major Fortnite update – patch 5.30 – was a huge release, bringing with it the Fortnite cube and the new Tomato Temple location.

And the upcoming Fortnite update 5.40 also looks set to be another major release.

The official Fortnite Twitter account has already revealed that the mysterious High Stakes event will be kicking off next week.

This was not leaked by dataminers going through current Fortnite game files beforehand, which suggests it will be coming in Fortnite update 5.40.

The Fortnite High Stakes event will bring with it new Getaway LTM, the Wild Card outfit as well as the High Stakes challenges.

The Fortnite Twitter account posted on Friday: “Suit up… the High Stakes event begins next week and with it comes the new Getaway LTM, Wild Card outfit, and High Stakes Challenges!“

Elsewhere a new Fortnite developer update video gave an insight into what’s coming with Fortnite update 5.40.

Fortnite design lead Eric Williamson explained that one game-changing tweak will be coming in Fortnite update 5.40.

Williamson explained that storm behaviour will be changed so that it damages player-built structures in the final phases on a match.

The Fortnite bigwig said that the change is only expected to affect “less than 10 per cent” of matches.

In the video, Williamson said: “So in 5.40 we have the new concept called Storm Damage.

“The basic idea is the edge of the storm will do damage to player-built structures in the final phases of the game.

“Less than 10 per cent of our matches are affected by this or make it that long.

“And so we’re really trying to tactically adjust the final stages to provide a little more dynamic gameplay.

“We really look forward to your feedback on the feature and we’re excited to see how this plays out.”

Williamson also revealed that the revolver is getting vaulted with the introduction of Fortnite update 5.40.

He said: “In 5.40 we’ll be vaulting the revolver.

“This part of an initiative to keep the item pool feeling fresh and dynamic.

“In the past you’ve seen that we brought back the guided missile which was vaulted for a period of time.

“So an item that is vaulted doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s gone forever.”

Williamson also hinted at a “new mobility item” is coming with Fortnite update 5.40 and said remote explosives are being changed to an epic rarity.

The release date and time for Fortnite update 5.40 has not been revealed yet.

But it is likely to launch on all platforms on Tuesday September 4 with servers going down at 9am BST judging by past launches.
