The EU is ’unprecedented filth that doesn’t deserve our money’ Italian minister FUMES

Mr Macron was setting out his vision for an EU superstate and was concerned about Britain gaining too much power from the EU.

But there are promising signs for a trade deal for Britain.

EU officials have hinted that France is becoming more isolated with member states as many are more prepared to come to a compromise for an agreement.

Mr Macron said: “Brexit is a sovereign choice, which we must respect. But it can’t come at the expense of the EU’s integrity.’

He also called for a eurozone budget, EU army and a single asylum policy for the whole bloc.

However, Mr Macron has come under strong criticism from prominent EU member states.

Italy’s interior minister, Matteo Salvini said the whole project is “filth”.

He attacked the EU for its failure to share responsibility for the continent’s migration crisis.

The row over any trade deal for Britain demonstrates the deep divisions that are coming to the fore in the EU over Brexit and other issues.

Mr Salvini, who is a prominent eurosceptic, has hit out at the EU about who should house asylum seekers rescued at sea.

Italian authorities forced the coastguard ship the Diciotti to remain at a port in Sicily as they refused to let it dock. It had 150 migrants on board.

Albania, who are not actually in the EU, and Ireland agreed to take some of the asylum seekers as Italy eventually allowed the ship to dock.

Giuseppe Conte, Italian Prime Minister, has threatened to veto the EU’s budget for the next seven years unless more help is offered to deal with migrants.

Deputy Prime Minister, Luigi Di Maio, added: “The EU has decided to turn its back on Italy once again.

“They want the 20 billion euros paid by Italian citizens? Then let them demonstrate that they deserve it and tat they are taking charge of a problem that we can no longer face alone. The borders of Italy are the borders of Europe.”

EU budget chief Gunther Oettinger retaliated by claiming that Italy actually only pays in 16 billion euros a year.

He also said that Italy would face “late payment interests” and “further heavy sanctions” in response.
