Top flight sides that aren’t involved in European competitions enter the EFL Cup at the second round, with fixtures taking place tonight and tomorrow.
Mark Hughes wants the adventure of a cup run with Southampton and believes it will enhance the club’s Premier League performances.
Saints travel along the south coast this evening for a Carabao Cup second-round clash at Brighton.
Hughes’ side narrowly avoided relegation in May but after a tricky start to the season, he hopes they can kick-start their campaign with victory at the Amex Stadium.
“I think it’s really important, we want a cup run, we want the excitement of a cup run if we can,” said Hughes.

“I’ve always been of the view that cup runs don’t hamper your league form, they enhance it. Because confidence comes from progressing into the latter rounds.
“And if we can do that I think it will help our league form and our confidence going into the Premier League games.
“So our intention is to get through the tie if we can.”
