McCoist backs Worrall move

Reports emerged last week that Rangers were edging closer to a loan move for Nottingham Forest’s Joe Worrall.

Celtic were said to also be in the mix but Rangers are seemingly ahead of the queue.

Steven Gerrard is keen to bring in a new centre-back to rival Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic, and McCoist believes Worrall would be the perfect choice.

“I think that would make sense,” said McCoist. “The two centre-backs, Goldson and Katic, I think have been excellent, along with the goalkeeper.

“They’ve looked really a lot more solid than they have done in many a season.

“But they certainly need back-up if they want to compete, as they naturally will want to do, on those fronts.”

Steven Gerrard issues update on two players

Steven Gerrard has denied suggestions he is lining up moves for Ryan Gauld and Nathan Dyer but says he wants a centre-back in before Friday’s deadline.

The Scottish transfer window closes on Friday, meaning Gerrard is running out of time to add to his 12 new signings this summer.

Both Dyer and Gauld have been mentioned as possible new recruits, but the Rangers boss insists a new centre-back remains his priority.

When asked about the links with Gauld, Gerrard said: “Nothing.

“I’ve been asked about Nathan Dyer and there’s nothing in that either.

“Hopefully we can get a centre-back in.

“I’m not sure if it’s loan or permanent – could be either.”

Gareth McAuley speaks out

Rangers have been strongly linked with a move for free agent Gareth McAuley in recent weeks to bolster their defensive options and the former West Brom has opened up on his future.

McAuley, who left West Brom at the end of last season with his contract up, has been touted for a move to Scotland.

Rangers are among the clubs reportedly interested in signing the Northern Ireland international, with Aberdeen and Hearts also linked.

But McAuley insists he is in no rush to make a decision on his future.

“I’m lucky that I’m able to be picky,” McAuley told The Times.

“There are lads who go through this sort of thing season after season, waiting for clubs, moving around all over the place, but I’m not thinking ‘I have to pay the bills.”

Transfers depend on Europa League qualification

Steven Gerrard has admitted Rangers’ pursuit for a Jamie Murphy replacement will depend on whether or not they qualify for the Europa League group stages.

The Light Blues were dealt a major blow during their Scottish League Cup match against Kilmarnock earlier this month when Murphy ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, ruling him out for the season.

And Gerrard has suggested Rangers will look to sign a replacement if they build on their 1-0 advantage over FC Ufa heading into the second leg on Thursday and reach the group stages.

“That will depend on whether we get through or not,” he said.

“We might have to line something up.”
