Arsenal news: Lucas Torreira sends team selection message to Unai Emery

The Uruguayan impressed Gunners fans with some sparkling performances at the World Cup during the summer.

Torreira was expected to be a regular starter in Emery’s lineups upon his arrival at the Emirates.

However, the former Sampdoria midfielder has had to settle with a place on the bench in the opening three games so far this season, missing out thanks to fellow new arrival Matteo Guendouzi and Granit Xhaka.

But now Torreira has made it clear he’s ready to be used from the outset for the Gunners, despite enjoying helping the team off the substitutes bench of late.

“Let’s hope so,” he told Arsenal’s official website after the 3-1 victory over West Ham, when asked if he had done enough to warrant a starting role.

“You train hard, you give your all and you want to improve.

“I want to start but any time I get on is very important for me.

‘For me the best thing is to be able to help my team, as I did today coming on in the second half, and we were able to get the win for our fans, who really deserve it.”

Torreira has already impressed fans in north London since his arrival back in July.

But the 22-year-old insists he is still getting to grips with English culture.

“I’m really happy here,” Torreira added.

“It’s all very new for me because I’ve come from a different type of league.

“The climate is different here and the way of life too, but I’m settling in nicely and training hard – the sessions are different too.

“The confidence will grow with every game, so that’s great.”

One player who has not seen eye-to-eye with Emery so far this term is Mesut Ozil.

The former German international missed Saturday’s clash with West Ham due to an illness, although reports claim Ozil may have had a bust-up with his new coach in recent weeks.

The Spaniard started Ozil against Chelsea earlier this month, only to hook the playmaker after 70 minutes.
