It was one of the major issues which ignited a furious fan reaction and took Disney, Lucasfilm and the industry by surprise.
Nobody expecetd a major part of the core fanbase to rebel after The Last Jedi. But after two years of expectaton building for the revelation of Rey’s parents, Kylo Ren told her they were nobodies, junk traders who sold her for drinking money.
Rian Johnson’s filmmaking choices left many disappointed and, even worse, feeling played.
While filming The Force Awakens, Daisy Ridley herself had said she thought the answer was obvious. Surely Episode 8’s revelation wasn’t what she meant? Now that JJ Abrams is back, can the director somehow salvage the situation in Episode 9?
The final Star Wars trilogy was conceived for three autonomous directors who each had complete freedom to shape each of their episodes.
While this means Johnson could take storylines set up in the previous movie and pursue his own vision, it also mean Abrams could conceivably somehow restore his original ideas. For example, whatever he may (or may not) have planned differently for Rey’s parents.
New leaked reports about early concept art for Episode 9 include a scene which might do just that.
The leak says: “One concept art image consists of a young girl on a sandy planet which could be Jakku.
“In front of the girl, likely to be Rey, are two silhouette figures in front of a sunset with a ship next to them. One is a female one is male. They look like they are adults.”
This ties in with other reports about casting and locations being used for the shoot.
Jordan has been reported as a potential filming location for Episode 9 and was the original location for Jakku in The Force Awakens, although in the end Abu Dhabi was used.
Furthermore, there have been other reports that a ’toddler” has been cast for a key role. Is this young Rey in a flashback or some form of vision?
Many believe Kylo Ren was either deceiving Rey on purpose or believed what he told her based on false information or misdirection.
The leaked concept art, if it turns out to be legitimate, sounds like the moment Rey was abandoned on Jakku.
Of course, maybe such a scene really would reveal a pair of worthless drunks, but most fans will be hoping for a Kenobi, Jinn or Skywalker or two…
