Hurricane Lane latest: Storm ‘to push LAVA haze onto Big Island if cyclone hits Kilauea’

The cyclone’s frightening 136mile an hour winds would push the volcano’s toxic ash cloud pumped from the monster back onto Big Island, spelling “disaster” for tourists and residents alike.

Dr Ben Van der Pluijm, professor of earth sciences at the University of Michigan, told Express.co.uk: “If they were to collide the hurricane would certainly push that laze back onto Big Island causing more of a disaster for the people of Hawaii.

“There would be a lot of vog that would be pushed back towards the caldera which would be extremely dangerous at a time when the volcano was erupting.”

Kilaeu’s poisonous mixture of sea water and lava has created a phenomenon called lava haze, also known as laze, which is a corrosive seawater plume laden with hydrochloric acid and fine volcanic particles that can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs.

The mass volcanic gas output would be blown back towards Big Island potentially making it inhabitable and resetting the effects of the eruption.

While on the move throughout the Pacific Ocean, should Hurricane Lane’s high winds and rain make contact with the volcano a vortex of ash cloud would also be carried across the waters and dispelled.

Though, Dr Van der Pluijm said the likelihood of the hurricane colliding with the volcano is low.

He said: “It’s important to stress the paths of the two will not cross, meaning the people of Hawaii have some good news.”

Category 4 cyclone Hurricane Lane peaked over the weekend while on route to Big Island, home to the erupting Kileau Volcano.

The beast, which has already killed four people, is currently heading south of Hawaii and out into the Pacific Ocean in a move no doubt welcomed by residents – but feared by boaters.

Fishermen and women, as well as swimmers, surfers and deep sea divers have been put on alert following reports from forecasters that show the dangerous storm will not pass Hawaiian waters unnoticed.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Steve Travis said: “Even though Lane will weaken and track to the south of the Big Island, it will generate rough surf and rip currents along the south and east-facing shores of Hawaii.”

During the week, large swells of ocean generated by Hurricane Lane will spread north and west as it tears through the waters with experts predicting waves will be at their roughest from Wednesday to Friday.

Authorities are expected to issue a series of beach closures as a result.
