Best supplements for high blood pressure – 1p a day capsules could slash hypertension risk

More than 25 per cent of all adults in the UK have high blood pressure.

The condition, which is also known as hypertension, puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

But, making some diet or lifestyle changes could help to lower the risk of high blood pressure.

Alternatively, taking garlic supplements may also lower your blood pressure, scientists have claimed.

Garlic supplements could lower blood pressure by as much as 12/5mmHg, according to researchers from The University of Adelaide.

The crucial part of garlic that lowers blood pressure is its active ingredient, S-Allyl cysteine, they said.

Nutritionist Dr David Williams added: “I don’t know of a single nutrient that will help everyone lower their blood pressure, but from my clinical experience, garlic probably helps the widest range of people.

“For overall health, I recommend at least a clove of garlic each day, raw or cooked. If you have heart problems or are recovering from a stroke, you should take garlic in supplement form as well.

“Be careful when buying garlic supplements. Many are 99 per cent vegetable oil with just a touch of garlic.

“I recommend one capsule, six times a day [one with each meal, assuming you are eating three nutritious meals per day, plus one capsule mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and in the evening].

“As your blood pressure starts to normalise, the dosage can be reduced gradually to one to three capsules a day.”

But, you should always follow dosage recommendations on the supplements’ packaging.

Taking garlic supplements may also help to reduce the amount of cholesterol in the body.

People with high cholesterol could reduce about 10 per cent of their cholesterol by taking the supplements, studies claimed.

Having high blood pressure increases the risk of some deadly complications, including heart disease and strokes.

The only way of knowing if you have hypertension is by getting it checked.

People may not even be aware that they have high blood pressure, as symptoms rarely appear.

All adults over 40 should check their blood pressure at least every five years.

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist to have your blood pressure checked.
