Hurricane Lane – Hawaii on ALERT as storm rips through Pacific

The category 4 cyclone peaked over the weekend as it passed the holiday hotspot’s Big Island, home to the erupting Kileau Volcano.

The beast, which has already killed four people, is currently heading south of Hawaii and out into the Pacific Ocean in a move no doubt welcomed by residents – but feared by boaters.

Fishermen and women, as well as swimmers, surfers and deep sea divers have been put on alert following reports from forecasters that show the dangerous storm will not pass Hawaiian waters unnoticed.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Steve Travis said: “Even though Lane will weaken and track to the south of the Big Island, it will generate rough surf and rip currents along the south and east-facing shores of Hawaii.”

During the week, large swells of ocean generated by Hurricane Lane will spread north and west as it tears through the waters with experts predicting waves will be at their roughest from Wednesday to Friday.

Authorities are expected to issue a series of beach closures as a result.

Accuweather’s Alex Sosnowski, senior meteorologist, said: “It can become dangerous for ocean vessels south of the islands as well as small craft attempting to navigate the inter-island channels.”

Hurricane Lane’s wrath comes a week after the fear-inducing Hurricane Hector, which caused similar conditions when it passed by Big Island on August 8.

Lane is expected to take on the same form as Hector, meaning that the centre of the storm would keep south of the Hawaiian islands.

Derek Wroe, forecaster with the National Weather Service in Honolulu, said: “Warm ocean water is the fuel for hurricanes.”

He added: “Expect intensification at least into the weekend.

“By midday Saturday, it should be approximately 1,000 miles southeast of the Big Island.”

Hurricane Lane began as a tropical storm but has since progressed to a full blown hurricane in the past few days.

Lane is the sixth hurricane of the 2018 Pacific season.

Wind speeds began at 75mph but experts believed once it morphed into a hurricane it was expected to maintain winds of 115mph.
