Lombok earthquake evacuation: Where are the evacuation zones after latest major tremor?

Residents and tourists on the island of Lombok have dealt with two major tremors in a matter of hours on Sunday and several aftershocks, leaving people “traumatised”.

The magnitude 6.9 tremor struck in the evening at 9.56pm WIB (3.56pm BST).

Shocks were felt the strongest in East Lombok, North Lombok, West Sumbawa, Sumbawa Besar, West Lombok and Mataram City for five to 10 seconds, the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) reported.

USGS revised down the tremor in the evening from magnitude 7.2 and estimated the depth at 25km and the epicentre 2km south of Belanting in the north-east side of Lombok.

As the latest quake hit in the evening, it has been difficult obtaining clear information on the impact of the earthquake.

People have reported behaving “hysterically”, according to BNPB, as the earthquakes are louder than before.

Officials have appealed to residents to remain vigilant and calm.

Those living in and around Sembalun and Sambelia in East Lombok are urged to stay away from hills, buildings and houses and seek refuge in open fields.

BNPB said in an update at 12pm local time the earthquake was felt the most in East Lombok, as it was closest to the epicentre.

It is unclear how many casualties and damage was caused by the latest earthquake.

Residents have been evacuated from the Sembalun district and anyone injured is being treated in Yonkes Field Hospital in Sembalun Field.

There are reports buildings have collapsed in the Sambelia district and people are urged to gather in fields and find a safe place.

Powerful earthquakes and aftershocks continue to hit Lombok – six tremors have struck on land or off the coast of Lombok in the two hours since the magnitude 6.9 earthquake.

The latest quake came just hours after a magnitude 6.3 quake struck at Sunday lunchtime which was felt in the east of the island, triggering landslides and sending people fleeing into the streets.

The 6.3 tremor resulted in one death from a “violent shock”, BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Twitter.

He said Sunday’s first quake “caused people to panic and flee their homes”.

Endri Susanto said: “People are traumatised by the previous earthquakes, and aftershocks never seem to stop.”

Lombok has suffered more than 5 trillion rupiah ($342 million; £268 million) in damages following the August 5 earthquake which killed least 460 people.

Lombok is a roughly 4,500 sq km (1,700 sq miles) island east of the slightly larger island of Bali.

Indonesia straddles the Pacific Ring of Fire and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
