The tremor sent people fleeing to the street in fear of a repeat of the devastation caused by the quake on Sunday, August 5.
More than 460 people died from the massive earthquake, which rocked the Indonesian island two weeks ago.
The latest quake struck at a depth of 7.9km (4.9 miles) at 12.10pm local time (5.10am BST), 6km north-east of Sembalunlawang in East Lombok, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The epicentre was on the northeastern shoulder of the island at the foot of Mount Rinjani.
There was no tsunami warning and authorities later said there had been only minor injuries and limited damage.

Residents said the earthquake was felt strongly in East Lombok.
East Lombok resident Agus Salim said: “I was driving to deliver aid to evacuees when suddenly the electricity pole was swaying.
“I realised it was an earthquake. People started to scream and cry. They all ran to the street.”
The tremor was felt in the island’s capital Mataram and on the neighbouring resort island of Bali.
Travellers were evacuated Lombok International Airport during Sunday’s quake.
In Mataram, the lights went out in a shopping centre and people ran from their homes for open fields, eye witnesses said.
Lombok has been struck by a series of quakes and aftershocks since July 29, including the deadly magnitude 6.9 earthquake on August 5.
The shallow earthquake damaged tens of thousands of homes and displaced several hundred thousand people.
Lombok suffered damage running to more than 5 trillion rupiah (£268 million) from the August 5 earthquake, authorities said last week.
The July 29 earthquake killed at least 16 people and triggered landslides in the mountain region of the island.
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the National Disaster Management Agency, said only one person had been lightly injured, two people had fainted an several house were damaged in the eastern part of the island.
Nugroho said activity on the island was normal and Mount Rinjani, where hundreds of trekkers were stranded after the July 29 quake, was closed and there was no tourists there.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ocean “Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates collide and many of the world’s volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.
In 2004, a tsunami was triggered by a magnitude 9.3 undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia, killing 220,000 people in countries around the Indian Ocean, including 168,000 in Indonesia.
