Weight loss: Eat your breakfast at this time to burn more calories scientists claim

Weight loss could be boosted by eating your breakfast before you exercise, scientists claim.

Though so-called “fasted cardio” has been a popular exercise fad recently, this study seems to suggest eating first thing is better for you.

Scientists at the University of Bath’s Department for Health test those who ate before exercise verses those who did not.

They found those who ate breakfast first increased the rate of calories burned.

Those who took part in the study and ate breakfast had a bowl of porridge made with milk two hours before exercise.

This increased the rate the body burned carbohydrates and also increased the metabolism during and after the exercise.

“This is the first study to examine the ways in which breakfast before exercise influences our responses to meals after exercise,” Dr Javier Gonzalez, senior lecturer in the Department of Health said.

“We found that, compared to skipping breakfast, eating breakfast before exercise increases the speed at which we digest, absorb and metabolise carbohydrate that we may eat after exercise.”

“This study suggests that, at least after a single bout of exercise, eating breakfast before exercise may ‘prime’ our body, ready for rapid storage of nutrition when we eat meals after exercise.”

So, those who skip breakfast in a bid to lose weight may be undermining their efforts.

A similar weight loss diet plan study from the American Journal of Epidemiology found that eating too small a breakfast can also damage weight loss efforts.

Eating less than 11 per cent of your recommended daily calorie intake at breakfast will lead to weight gain.

For a woman, 11 per cent of the recommended daily calorie amount is 220 calories.

For a man 11 per cent of the recommended daily calorie amount is 275 calories.

Eating less than this is associated with putting on weight.

Nutritionist Sarah Flower revealed why breakfast could could be sabotaging weight loss efforts exclusively to Express.co.uk recently.

In Briton’s quest for calorie counting, the UK has seen a rise in what Sarah calls “Frankenstein foods; claiming to be low calorie and low fat”.

In order to actually lose weight, the quality of the food over the calories needs to also be taken into consideration.

A diet of “real” food is the first and foremost change everyone should make in their quest for good health and this journey starts with the first meal of the day.

By avoiding processed foods, dieters are cutting out unnecessary sugars and unhealthy fats, replacing these with nutrient-rich food in its more natural state. So opt for fresh foods to start the day off right.
