Federer is in Cincinnati Masters action this week as he ramps up his preparations for the US Open later this month.
The Swiss star recorded a second-round win against Peter Gojowczyk yesterday and is now gearing up to face Leonardo Mayer tomorrow.
No 3 seed Alexander Zverev crashed out of the competition to Robin Haase and Rafael Nadal withdrew, so Federer is now the clear favourite to win the tournament.
And he is planning on starting every game with a bundle of energy to ensure his opponents cannot get a grip of the game.
“I think it is important to always play your game, especially on faster surfaces,” Federer said.

“You should not play too reactive I believe or else you are at the mercy of another player.
“In this day and age everybody serves big and everyone can hit big from the baseline.
“Eventually they’ll connect and then you’ll be in trouble so you have to protect yourself first and second serves of your opponent, you can do some stuff there.
“I think it is very important to bring in your own energy, even if it is the first round or the finals.”
Federer is also glad to have put his Wimbledon quarter-final defeat behind him.
“I felt good in that first match, to be honest, walking out, hardly any nerves. I think I knew what I had to do,” Federer added.
“It’s fast-court tennis. I knew my opponent was going to go for it and take big cuts at the ball, so there is only so much you can really do.
“It’s nice to have played a match so that my last match was not the [Kevin] Anderson match … you’ve kind of turned the page. It’s a good thing.
“The goal is now to recover from this match, take the positives with me. Of course the big goal is the US Open.”
