Houston Rockets news: NBA expert reveals why Carmelo Anthony SHOULD start

Anthony’s $27.9m expiring contract was traded to the Hawks as part of a complex three-team deal with Dennis Schroder heading in the opposite direction.

The Hawks subsequently bought out Anthony’s deal, allowing him to enter free agency before penning a veteran’s minimum contract for last year’s Western Conference top seed.

Former New York Knick Anthony endured a year to forget in Oklahoma City, finishing the season with career-worst averages in both field goal percentage and points-per-game, leaving many to question what he might be able to contribute to the Rockets’ roster next year.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Rockets are planning to use Anthony coming off the bench – a role he had previously laughed off – but Stephen A. Smith suggested the 34-year-old remains capable of producing the goods from a starting role for the Rockets.

“He should be starting,” Smith said.

“He is Carmelo Anthony. The reality is, even though I say that, I recognise the fact he is not what he used to be.

“But I cannot emphasise enough, I’ll keep regurgitating these same comments throughout the year. It is a different world playing with Chris Paul.

“Chris Paul is one of the greatest point guards of our generation. When you talk about Steph Curry, you talk about his jump shooting ability, not that he can’t play point because obviously he is a damn good point guard but he is the greatest shooter we’ve ever seen.

“When we talk about Russell Westbrook, he’s a mercurial superstar who happens to be the greatest athlete we’ve ever seen playing the point guard position. We used to say the same thing about Derrick Rose before those knee injuries decimated him. But when you talk about Chris Paul, you are literally embracing what a point guard is supposed to be. A floor general. An umbilical cord to the coach, an extension of the coach on the floor.

“Somebody who knows what everybody’s job is, not just his own, and knows how to maximise the potential of all the pieces around him. When you play with Chris Paul it is a different world. Look at the Clippers with him, look at the Clippers without him. Look at DeAndre Jordan with him, look at DeAndre Jordan without him.

“Chris Paul is something special and then you combine the close relationship that they have with one another because they are tight with each other – as much as we talk about the banana boat crew with D Wade, LeBron, Chris Paul, Melo, remember that Melo and CP3 are incredibly tight.

“You add to that the greatness of James Harden, you take that into account and you look at Mike D’Antoni’s system, which feeds more offence, not necessarily defence… and I’ll just say, it all spells a plus for Melo.”
