BREAKING: Decomposing body found inside California supermarket entrance column

The body was found after the store owner, noticing the smell, called a plumber to investigate.

The plumber removed some bricks and found a leg and shoe inside.

Authorities believe it may be the body of a man the police were chasing last Monday.

The suspect ran away from police after crashing a vehicle during a chase.

He jumped onto the roof of WinCo store, after which police were unable to locate him.

There is access from the store roof to the inside of the front column.

Los Angeles County sheriff Lt. John Corina said: “He may have gotten inside there and somehow gotten down the column, trying to hide from the deputies and then couldn’t get out.”

Corina added: “It’s been over 100 degrees up here everyday. I cant imagine being inside that column and just baking.

“It’s a strange development, and if he died that way, it’s a horrible way to die.”

The store is expected to remain closed whilst the scene is investigated and the body extracted.

A coroner will be required to determine exactly how the victim died.

It’s not yet clear whether he fell to his death or became trapped in the column and was unable to escape.

Los Angeles County police responded to the incident at 2:40pm local time.

The WinCo Foods store is located in the 700 block of West Avenue K in the town.

Henry Oliver, a witness, described the event when the victim was running away from the police.

He said: “He got out of the car, ran in, ran up the steps and somehow got on to the roof.”
