Gear S4 release: Samsung could have a huge surprise in store for smartwatch fans

The Gear S4 was initially expected to be unveiled at the IFA technology show in Berlin, but rumours have suggested Samsung is lining up an announcement during its “Unpacked” event on Thursday.

Speculation has been ripe about the new smartwatch with many suggesting Samsung could ditch the Gear branding in exchange for a new “Galaxy Watch” name.

Last month it was reported the South Korean tech giant had registered a logo for “Galaxy Watch” in preparation for the new hardware.

A photo emerged of the logo and showed the words displayed in a very similar font to that of Samsung’s S and Note line of smartphones.

Such a move could hint the company is planning to closely integrate the differing pieces of hardware.

vCard QR Code

The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.

But now more details about the watch appear to have emerged thanks to a user on discussion website Reddit.

Wan997 posted a slew of alleged details about the upcoming product and insisted he learned of them from his ties to a “Samsung national trainer”.

He stated the watch will in fact take on the “Galaxy Watch” name to distance itself from the Gear branding.

Moreover he declared the product will come in two variants; a 46millimetre and 42millimetre case to suit differing wrist sizes.

The bigger version of the wearable will boast “seven days” of battery life, according to the user’s post.

Such a move would drastically improve the time needed between charges when compared to the Gear S3.

The Gear S3 typically needed to be charged every two days.

However, Wan997 did not detail usage cases when claiming such laudable battery life.

He did explain the watch will feature over 40 workout modes however.

This would drastically improve from the Gear S3 that only featured 10.

Most notably the Reddit user insisted the new wearable will not come packing Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technology.

MST sends a magnetic signal from a device to the payment reader in an effort to emulate a real swipe from a tangible card.

Samsung has touted the technology as being “more secure than using a traditional payment card” and comparable to Near Field Communication (NFC).

Wan997 insisted the watch would feature the latter to allow for Samsung Pay transactions.

Fans eagerly awaiting details of the Galaxy Watch will not have to wait long to see if this latest leak is true.

Samsung will have its “Unpacked” event on August 9 – Express.co.uk will be covering it live.
