Arsenal transfer news: Unai Emery makes decision as he aims to solve defensive crisis

Arsenal have problems at left-back with Sead Kolasinac set for two months on the sidelines having picked up a knee injury in the recent friendly against Chelsea.

Nacho Monreal hasn’t featured in Arsenal’s preparations for the new season having returned from the World Cup with a knee injury.

The Spaniard is expected to return to Emery’s squad this week but is a major doubt for Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Manchester City on Sunday (4pm).

And with youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles set to fill the role against the champions, Emery has decided he needs fresh cover.

And the Daily Mail report the new boss will target AC Milan full-back Ricardo Rodriguez before the transfer window closes on Thursday (5pm).

Rodgriguez moved to Milan last summer after spending five seasons in Germany with Wolfsburg.

It’s claimed that Milan are keen to keep hold of the 25-year-old and it may cost Emery £30million to get his man.

Arsenal have already made five signings this summer with Matteo Guendouzi, Bernd Leno, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Lucas Torreira all arriving.

That was expected to be the end of Arsenal’s transfer dealings but the crisis at left-back has changed that.

Emery had said: “My focus is on the first match and preparing, and not for the window and the possibility to sign another player.

“Maybe we need some players to leave because we have lots in the squad, but at the moment, my one focus is on our work.”

Discussing Monreal’s injury, Emery added: “He arrived with one, not big injury. His knee has a little problem.

“He is training every day, but not with the squad. He is doing the work alone with the physio and running.

“We think maybe he can train with the squad on Tuesday, he can start with the team.

“We don’t want the injuries. We have players, one is Nacho but he arrived later with the World Cup and also with a small injury.

“I think it is difficult [for him] to arrive for the match against Manchester City. For that we are trying Ainsley [Maitland-Niles], he played in that position.”
