The extraordinary move was announced by the Russian Foreign Ministry and the national TV station RT. A statement said: “It’s a case of people’s diplomacy intersecting with traditional diplomacy.”
According to Reuters: “Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Saturday it had made U.S. actor Steven Seagal its special representative for Russian-U.S. humanitarian ties, a role it said was meant to deepen cultural, art and youth ties between the two countries.”
Seagal previously denounced all the “propaganda flying about Russia.”
How has this happened? It is the latest development in Seagal’s increasingy close relations with Moscow and its president.
RT quoted Seagal as saying: “I’ve always had a very strong desire to do all I can to help improve Russian-American relations.

The role carries no salary or official duties but follows the Under Seige star receiving honorary Russian citizenship last year.
At the time he said: “My father was pure Russian. I have lots of relatives here.
“I think one thing that’s sort of not known is that there are millions and millions of people who have dual and multi citizenship. I think the thing that makes it controversial is all the propaganda flying about Russia.”
Seagal has frequentlybeen personal guest of the Russian president, who was re-elected for another six-year term in May.
US Russian relations remain constantly in flux as the ongoing investigations into alleged Russian tampering in global elections continue. Donald Trump’s meeting with Putin in Finland in July, however, saw the US president’s approval ratings rise, as did US approval ratings in Russia.
Seagal was invited to Moscow to watch Putin’s inauguration earlier this year.
The 66-year-old actor’s movies have been enormously popular in Russia although his star had faded considerably in the US.
Most recently he attracted attention for his dramatic new look.
