WATCH: HUGE earthquake DEVASTATES popular tourist hotspot along volatile Ring of Fire

A powerful earthquake has devastated a popular tourist destination in Indonesia, as the death toll continues to rise.

At least 14 people have died so far after the 6.4-magnitude quake struck Lombok island in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The island is well-known as a global summer destination, due to its tourist resorts, beaches and hiking trails.

However, the island also sits along the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire – an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

Hundreds of people have been injured, while the number of homes damaged is in the thousands.

The quake was so strong that its tremors were felt in neighbouring Bali, which sits just 25 miles away.

A Malaysian tourist who was on a hiking trip to the popular destination Mount Rinjani is among those killed.

Mount Rinjani National Park has since been closed due to landslides.

According to government officials, landslides have shut down water supply routes and electricity for dozens of houses.

Around 11 aftershocks were recorded, as well as 60 smaller earthquakes following the first one.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the country’s disaster agency, said: “The main focus now is evacuation and rescue.

“Some of the injured are still being treated at clinics.”

He added that most of the injuries came from falling blocks of concrete.

Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, a citizen protection director at the foreign ministry, told the BBC: “The quake felt so strong.

“Tourists were panicked and frightened and escaped from hotels.”

One tourist in a hotel resort noticed “waves in the hotel pool” just minutes before the huge quake struck.

They added: “The locals were worried because many of their structures are made from wood and bamboo, but the tourists were the most scared.”
