Syrian army launch ‘DOOMSDAY’ attack on rebel-held city as surrender deals mount

Reports indicate dozens of civilians have been killed after Bashar al-Assad’s army fired numerous rockets on the heavily-populated city, which is located near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Malek al Ghawi, a Nawa resident, commented on the airstrikes, saying: “It’s like doomsday.

“There are many corpses in the streets and everyone is unable to pull them.”

Abu Hashem, another resident, added: “We don’t know where to take the injured, the town has been burnt.”

The heaviest bombardment was launched from al-Haara, a strategically-located hill close to Nawa, which was recaptured from rebel forces on Monday.

The bombardment occurred only hours after thousands of displaced residents returned to Nawa from taking shelter along the Israeli border.

One resident noted they only returned following reports rebels had reached a surrender deal with the Russian army in order to avoid a military bombardment.

A Russian-backed military operation was launched last month to take back control of a large area of territory in the south-west of Syria which is still under the control of rebel forces.

They have recaptured most of the rebel-held territory in the Deraa province, but are still fighting for a strip straddling Deraa and Quneitra provinces which adjoins the Golan Heights.

Isis militants also occupy a small area of territory close to the Jordanian border.

Hundreds of rebel fighters started evacuating the city of Deraa on Sunday after agreeing a surrender deal with Russia, nearly three weeks after Russian-led bombardment of the region forced rebels to surrender the entire Deraa region.

Under the deals, rebel fighters are obliged to hand over their weapons, and those who do not want to live under central government rule are transferred out to other opposition areas.

Those rebels who do remain are amalgamated into Russian-led local security forces.

On Sunday, Abu Shaima, a rebel official, stated that at least 500 rebel fighters were heading to the opposition-led Idlib region in 15 buses.

Rebel fighter Abdullah Masalmah commented on his decision to leave the Deraa region, stating: “I cannot forget the thousands of those who were killed by the regime let alone the orphans, wounded and the detainees.

“I don’t trust the Russians or the regime.”

Nawa is the most densely populated city in the rebel-held region of Deraa with a population of at least 100,000 people.
