Putin Trump news conference: Putin says ‘Cold War is OVER – confrontation is in the past’

Media gathered in Helsinki for the press conference this afternoon where Mr Putin said: “The negotiations with Donald Trump has been held in a sincere and straightforward manner. They have been successful.

“Bilateral ties are undergoing a difficulty phrase but theses difficulties do not have any objective grounds.

“The cold war is over, ideological confrontation is in the past.”

Mr Putin added Crimea, Syria and Iran subjects were discussed.

He called for an increase in investment and trade between nations and asked for businesses to put forward proposals.

Mr Putin: “I had to repeat Russia has and will never interfere with US domestic affairs in an election campaign.”

He also said they had agreed for a cyber security agreement to be set up.

The Russian president added: “We are content with the results of our meeting. Previously we only briefly met. We had a good talk and hopefully we understand each other better. I’m thankful to Donald.

“We’ve made an important first step.”

Mr Trump said: Disagreements between our country are well known and we discussed that today.

“Too often in recent past and long ago we’ve seen consequences when diplomacy is left on the table. We’ve also seen benefits of cooperation such as working together in the Second World War.”

On meeting Putin, the US president said: “I’d rather take a political risk in pursuit of peace, than to risk peace in pursuit of politics.”

Earlier pair met in the Finland capital this morning and posed for photographs.

Mr Trump told press he was looking forward to building an “extraordinary relationship” with Russia after two years of problems.

On the agenda for talks were “everything from trade to military, to missiles:, from Mr Trump. The US president said they would also be discussing “their joint friend” President Xi of China.
