Not knowing her biological father, Sophie had invited three possible candidates to attend her wedding day, without telling her mother.

Meryl Streep will also be flanked by British acting legend Julie Walters and Christine Baranski, who play her best friends Rosie and Tanya.

Cher is confirmed to make an appearance in the newest release, in a major role alongside Lily James, another new introduction to the last films cast.

Cher will be playing Ruby, grandmother to Sophie, as the film builds on the dominant family theme.

So far, we have seen the singer make an appearance in the latest trailer for the film, gatecrashing a party.

The ‘I Got You Babe’ singer is set to duet with Andy Garcia, singing her not so well known ‘Fernando’.

A rendition of Super Trouper at the end of the film is also set to feature vocals from the singing superstar.

What is the plot for Mamma Mia 2?

Mamma Mia 2 will take place five years after the events of the first film.

Still based on the island of Kalokairi, Sophie is pregnant with Sky’s child while running her mother’s villa.

Sophie will be guided by Tanya and Rosie into her mothers’ past, including fronting pop band the Dynamos and founding her villa on the island.

The sequel will introduce exactly how Donna met her three exes, and see Sophie meet grandmother Ruby
