Two minutes before the end of the game, revellers let off firecrackers which were mistaken for gunshots.
As soon as the party explosives were detonated, panic spread through the streets and people started fleeing.
Jean-Gabriel Delacroix from the city prefecture said: “There was a crowd surge after firecrackers were detonated.
“Most of the injuries are glass cuts and bruising picked up when people fell.”
At least one thousand people were in the Cours Salyea area of Nice when the stampede broke out.
From the images and videos that circulated on social media, there was extensive damage to the area and chairs and tables were overturned.
An eyewitness told local newspaper Nice-Matin: “I was sitting on the terrace in the courthouse square and by the time the referee whistled the end of the match, I saw people running in.
“They seemed to be coming from Cours Saleya, screaming, looking frightened.
“Some of the guests outside had time to take shelter inside, but not all of them, and I found myself on the floor, in the middle of the chairs and the inverted tables.”
Witnesses said at least six ambulances were deployed to the scene, as people had to be treated for minor injuries like cuts and scrapes.
Around fifty firefighters were also present at the area as a fan zone had been set up for fans to watch the match.
The incident highlighted how Nice remains on edge two years after an Islamist militant drove a truck through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day.
At least 84 people were killed and dozens more injured in the attack.
The driver of the truck, named as Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, was shot dead by police.
