Wimbledon: Mats Wilander picks biggest surprise of the tournament – exclusive

Wimbledon’s men’s draw has gone according to the script this year as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic all eased into the quarter-finals.

The trio are all in action this afternoon and are expected to progress to the semi-finals to extend their dominance in the sport.

But there has been one surprise which has caught Eurosport pundit Wilander off guard.

And that is the fact none of the talented youngsters, such as Nick Kyrgios, Alexander Zverev or Denis Shapovalov, have managed to progress to the second week.

“For me, the biggest surprise is that there have been no surprises,” Wilander told Express Sport.

“I was thinking that some of the younger guys would be really going far in this tournament.

“I thought Nick Kyrgios would have been seriously challenging for the title and Canadian Denis Shapovalov, I thought we would see him towards the second week. Sacha Zverev as well.

“I think there are only two guys below 30 in the last eight in [Kei] Nishikori and [Milos] Raonic which is a surprise to me.

“That shocked me that the younger players. The skill is there but they now need to do it at a Grand Slam.”

Marin Cilic, runner-up in 2017, and Grigor Dimitrov were also knocked out early on.

But Wilander found it more surprising that the younger lads did not step up their game.
