‘It is not YET a crisis’ Juncker attempts to play down eurosceptic UPRISING in Italy

The European Commision and its president have remained coy about the threat posed by eurosceptic parties in Italy after their recent election success.

The Five Star Movement and League parties both returned the highest share of the votes, with Matteo Salvini of League looking most likely to form a centre-right coalition government.

The coalition is currently in talks with their fellow eurosceptics in Five Star Movement about the future of the country, with some suggesting an even division of the key executive roles between the parties.

Five Star is expected to take control over the lower chamber of the Italian Parliament while Lega’s coalition partners Forza Italia are rumoured to be in talks to secure leadership of the senate.

Upon entering the EU summit meeting in Brussels, Mr Juncker was asked whether there is any growing concern about Italy.

The Commision President may have let slip there could be panic in Brussels, by suggesting the EU is “not yet” concerned.

Mr Juncker told journalists: “Italia is Italia, it is its own democracy.

“Decision makers will find a solution, it is not yet a crisis.”

Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, who is also in attendance, instead focused on data firm Cambridge Analytica’s alleged misuse of Facebook data.

He did, however, announce a meeting with Mr Juncker to discuss his party’s defeat to the eurosceptics, earlier this month.

Mr Gentiloni said it was “very important” to keep in touch with the Commission.
