Etihad flight A380 departed Abu Dhabi in the UAE at 2.50am local time and was scheduled to land in New York at 9.30am.
It has now declared an emergency over Iceland as it makes its way across the Atlantic Ocean.
The plane is now diverting to Keflavik.
Flight tracking website AirLive tweeted: “Etihad A380 flight #EY103 from Abu Dhabi to JFK is declaring an emergency.”
The plane is broadcasting a Squawk 7700 alert, which indicates a general emergency.
