Man Utd 2-0 Brighton: Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic rise up to inspire FA Cup win

Manchester United went into the match against Brighton knowing a defeat would be catastrophic.

The mood around Old Trafford needed lifting following the dire Champions League exit to Sevilla in midweek.

And, in Lukaku, they have a man for the big occasion.

The Belgium international scored in the 37th minute with a thunderbolt header past Tim Krul.

The Red Devils then grabbed a second late on when Matic found the net with seven minutes left on the clock.

It was, however, a rather drab affair for all Manchester United fans inside the ground.

United raised eyebrows before the game by leaving Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez on the bench.

Yet while the duo have been made scapegoats for the team’s underwhelming displays, United still look mediocre.

But one man who will be relieved if Jose Mourinho.

The 54-year-old has had the look of a man under pressure at Old Trafford in recent times.

Just yesterday, he produced a 12-minute rant in response to one question a journalist asked him.

But he will no doubt be smiling again tonight with United now hopeful of ending the campaign with a trophy to their name.
