Tomb Raider: Will there be a sequel? Director of new movie speaks out on franchise rumours

The movie is another attempt at bringing the iconic videogame character to the big screen, after Angelina Jolie played the part in 2001 and 2003.

Naturally, there are now questions over whether it’s the first movie in a planned franchise – so will there be a sequel?

During a recent interview, director Roar Uthaug was asked if he sees there being more adventures with Vikander as Croft, and kept his cards close to his chest.

“We haven’t started talking about that at all, now we’re just focused on making this movie,” he told ScreenRant.

“I think what we’ve tried on this movie is to show how Lara Croft goes from being young independent girl in East London and then going through all these ordeals and then when she’s comes out in the end she’s kind of become the Tomb Raider there and I think that’s what we wanted to do with this movie.”

Vikander herself has said she would jump aboard another movie, given the chance.

Responding to a fan question during a Q&A with GameSpot, she said: “Yes, I adored taking on the role of Lara.

“So yes we’ll see, if there’s an audience out there for it then we’d love to.”

What could stand in the way of a Tomb Raider return is the performance of this first film: whilst audience numbers are still to follow, the critical reaction to this movie has been decidedly mixed.

It has a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes at time of writing – although that is a notably better score than either of Jolie’s attempts.

Tomb Raider is out now.
