The pedestrian bridge connecting the Florida International University campus with the Miami suburb Sweetwater caved in just before 2pm local time, local media reports.
A Miami Herald reporter tweeted that police believe there were “mass casualties”.
The bridge was only installed on Saturday and Florida International University (FIU) has issued an alert to avoid the areaFIU in a statement on Twitter said: “We are shocked and saddened by the tragic events unfolding at the FIU-Sweetwater pedestrian bridge.
“At this time we are still involved in rescue efforts and gathering information.
“We are working closely with authorities and first responders at the scene.”
