Russia THREAT: Britons given travel warning but England fans still vow to attend World Cup

Relations between Britain and Russia are strained following last week’s nerve agent attack on Russian defector Sergei Skripal and daughter Yulia in Salisbury.

Prime Minister Theresa May has placed the blame squarely at the door of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who hit back by warning her “not to threaten a nuclear power”.

Following the apparent assassination attempt, Mrs May had called for Russia to respond to the accusations – and when they failed to do so, announced the expulsion of 23 Russian diplomats.

In addition, no government ministers and no members of the Royal Family will attend the finals, which are due to kick off on June 14.

Foreign secretary Boris Johnson last week appeared to float the idea of an outright boycott – although he subsequently backtracked.

However the FSF, the independent body which represents football fans in England and Wales, predicted that fans would not be put off attending – for now at least.

A spokesman said: “The FSF would advise fans who plan on following England abroad to heed all Foreign Office advice – whether that’s at the 2018 World Cup in Russia or any future fixtures.

“‘Be on the Ball’ as the Foreign Office campaign says.

“The FA has given no indication that the national side won’t compete in Russia.

“As long as the England team is taking part, then fans will travel in their thousands to back the team, and the FSF’s Fans Embassy will be in Russia to support those fans.”

The FA itself has not yet confirmed whether it will be sending senior officials to the tournament, with Mrs May observing: “I’m sure they will want to be considering their position.

“Attendance at sporting events is a matter for the sporting authorities – it’s a matter for them.”

An FA spokesman pledged to “continue to work closely with the UK government and relevant authorities”.

He added: “Our priority for all England matches is to ensure the safety and security of the fans, players and staff.

“As is standard practice, we will take all travel guidance from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.”

With exactly three months until kick-off, the Foreign Office today issued updated advice to British nationals currently in Russia and those planning to visit in the coming weeks.

It said: “You should be aware of the possibility of anti-British sentiment or harassment at this time.

“You’re advised to remain vigilant, avoid any protests or demonstrations and avoid commenting publicly on political developments.

“While the British Embassy in Moscow is not aware of any increased difficulties for British people travelling in Russia at this time, you should follow the security and political situation closely and keep up to date with this travel advice.”
