The crash occurred on Interstate 10 around 20 miles east of Mobile at 5:30 a.m. local time (6:30 a.m. ET), police said.

In addition to the fatality, one person was critically injured and five others were listed in serious condition, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office said. Several others suffered minor injuries.

The bus ended up about 50 feet down the ravine, police said.

The vehicle was one of two buses chartered to transport band members from Channelview High School back to Houston, Texas, a spokesman for the Channelview Independent School District confirmed.

Local media reported that several helicopters responded to airlift the injured from the scene of the accident to area hospitals.
