Northern Lights: Incredible photos of Aurora Borealis as seen from SPYPLANE

U-2 pilot and instructor Ross Franquemont, of the 1st Reconnaissance Squadron based at Beale Air Force Base in California, has taken a series of images on his missions and the latest collection must be among his finest snaps.

The images taken of the Northern Lights were taken by Ross, a keen photographer, during his mission from the UK in the U-2 Dragonlady aircraft.

Ross said: β€œI had no idea how fast the aurora moved and changed. It danced around, changing shape several times a second. That made it a challenge for the photographer in a spacesuit sitting in shaking metal can moving 500 mph.”

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights in the northern hemisphere is a natural light display caused by the collision of solar wind and magnetospheric charged particles with the high altitude atmosphere.
