Michael Schumacher latest: Ferrari fans honour Formula 1 legend with huge flag

Supporters of the stricken sports icon, 49, unfurled a 30-metre long flag during yesterday’s pre-season testing race in Barcelona.

The flag, which reads “Michael forever”, is attached to the top of the main grandstand in the Catalan city.

The huge banner was produced by members of the official Ferrari fan club from Italy.

F1 journalist Tobi Gruner tweeted: “Ferrari fans showing their flags on the main grandstand. Michael Schumacher not forgotten.”

Another F1 reporter, Alessa-Luisa Naujoks, added: “Michael forever! Forza Michael!

“This banner at the Barcelona circuit stands for the thoughts and good wishes of millions of fans all over the world!”

The seven-time world champion suffered a traumatic brain injury in a ski accident in the French Alps in December 2013.

He was placed in a medically induced coma for six months.

Mr Schumacher left hospital in Grenoble, France, for further rehabilitation at the University Hospital of Lausanne in Switzerland.

In September 2014 he was relocated to his home where he continues to receive private medical treatment.

Official updates from the Schumacher family have been few and far between since the accident.

In November, his wife Corinna Betsch told the press: “The decision to protect his privacy from the public has been taken in Michael’s interest.

“We have made it very clear that something serious has happened.”

In January, Schumacher celebrated his 49th birthday and his daughter Gina took to Instagram leaving a heartfelt message to her father.

She wrote on the social networking site: “Happy Birthday to the best Dad ever. We love you. #keepfighting.”
