Liverpool news: Martin Keown makes huge Champions League claim

That’s according to BBC pundit Martin Keown.

The Reds booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 5-0 aggregate thrashing of Porto after a dull goalless draw at Anfield in their second leg.

Answering fans in his column for the Daily Mail, the former Arsenal defender suggested that Jurgen Klopp’s side – who have scored more goals in the competition than any other team with 28 in just eight games – can go all the way.

And if they do progress to the latter stages, Keown believes they could face a familiar opponent.

“If you dare to dream, we could well have a Champions League final of Liverpool versus Manchester City,” he said when asked which English teams had the best chance of success.

“It is not inconceivable that Liverpool could go on to win it. In 2005, they finished some 37 points behind champions Chelsea in the Premier League but beat them in the Champions League semi-finals.

“If City came up against Liverpool in Europe, they would find themselves under extra pressure. Victory for Liverpool would undermine some of City’s domestic dominance.

“This draw could decide who wins it. I really hope Liverpool and City are kept apart – and I do not think Real Madrid would be too keen to face either.”

The hopes of five Premier League teams making the last eight of the Champions League were quashed last night with Tottenham’s exit at the hands of Juventus.

That leaves Spurs with the FA Cup their only potential trophy this season and Juve defender Giorgio Chiellini suggested that it is in the club’s DNA to squander opportunities to become an elite side.

But Keown dismissed suggestions that Liverpool should be under equal pressure to win trophies as Spurs, with both clubs without silverware since 2012 and 2008 respectively.

He added: “Liverpool are a club renowned for winning trophies but they have not won any silverware since the League Cup in 2012.

“Jurgen Klopp has made Liverpool much better than local rivals Everton and now they are going toe-to-toe with Manchester United to become the second-best team in the country.

“The fact that they are on an even keel with United may have relieved some of the pressure to win a trophy.

“Pep Guardiola described Tottenham as the ‘Harry Kane team’ and while Spurs have plenty of other fine players, there is a feeling that the club would change significantly should the striker leave.

“For that reason, there is a pressure on Tottenham to win silverware.”
