St David: Top ten facts about the patron saint of Wales

1. St George was a Roman soldier; St Andrew was born in Galilee; St Patrick was born in Scotland or Wales. St David was born in Wales, the only native patron saint of a country in the British Isles.

2. He was born near the present city of St Davids around 520AD. He died on March 1 in 589 or 601.

3. One of his best known legendary miracles occurred when preaching to a large crowd and the ground rose up to form a hill so all could see him.

4. He is said to have been born to St Non (or Nonita) after she was raped by a local chieftain.

5. In the Middle Ages, it was believed that St David was a nephew of King Arthur. 

6. According to the rules of the monastery he founded, monks pulled the plough themselves rather than use oxen.

7. St David advised his followers not to eat meat or drink beer.

8. In a battle against the Anglo-Saxons, David advised his soldiers to wear identifying leeks in their hats. The leek thus became a Welsh emblem.

9. St David’s in Pembrokeshire in the smallest city in the UK. Its population is only 1,841.

10. It gained city status in the 16th century, had it taken away in 1888, but it was restored in 2004.
