Earlier this week, Roxane Gay showed interest in taking over from Whedon, leading Warner Bros. vice president Michele Wells to reply: “Contact me.”
Now, Gay has sparked speculation that – given the choice – she’d install none other than Janelle Monae in the title role.
Earlier this week she shared a photo of the two spending time together, with the simple caption: “Hi.”
She added: “We did discuss Batgirl.”
That was enough to set DC fans into a flurry of excited speculation, with many considering Monae a very strong choice indeed for the role.
Monae shot to fame in the music industry but has proven her acting chops with roles in two Oscar-nominated movies: Hidden Figures, and the Best Picture-winning Moonlight.
Artist Rachel Stott even drew some concept art of what Monae would look like as Batgirl, with almost 9,000 fans hitting Like on Twitter.
One other person who has regularly put her name in the ring is Lindsay Lohan.
She told Wendy Williams earlier this year, however, that media coverage of her past troubles will probably end up standing in her way.
“Whenever people bring up the past, things I’ve experienced and gone through – jail and working at the morgue, which is actually really traumatising stuff… I’ve learned my lessons,” she said.
“But then it distracts from actually maybe meeting with people to do Batgirl or maybe doing a Mean Girls 2.”
Batgirl is currently without a release date.
