Rafael Nadal appears in bizarre Mexico Open preparation with SpongeBob SquarePants

Nadal is preparing to return to action in Mexico this week for the first time since injury at the Australian Open.

Nadal was forced to withdraw in the quarter-final against Marin Cilic.

And Roger Federer has now overtaken him as world No 1 after winning in Melbourne and then again in Rotterdam last week.

Nadal starts his fight back in Mexico but his preparations have appeared rather strange, appearing on court with cartoon character SpongeBob.

But he insists he is not necessarily favourite for the tournament.

“I do not think or feel like a favorite to win the tournament, I do not have that inner pressure,” Nadal said.

“I come to play. I have trained three hours daily. I’ll try my best. Sometimes things go right or wrong and one must go prepared to accept both things, but at this point there is no pressure, but the personal demand to do things well.”

He added: “In general I have good memories (of Acapulco).

“The 2013 had a special value more than any other because they were many months without being able to compete, so I arrived with many physical problems, but winning that tournament was a starting point is in my heart and was very important in my career in general.”
