Man City news: De Bruyne targets trophy haul after Carabao Cup win

The Belgian is among the favourites for Player of the Season having orchestrated much of City’s magnificent football this season from a deeper central midfield role.

De Bruyne’s latest moment of ingenuity came in forcing the Citizens’ second goal in their 3-0 cup final demolition of Arsenal at Wembley Stadium.

The 26-year-old rolled a clever low cross from a corner kick towards Ilkay Gundogan on the edge of the box with the midfielder’s shot diverted in by captain Vincent Kompany.

That followed Sergio Aguero’s deft lob before a brilliant David Silva strike topped things off as City claimed their first piece of silverware under Guardiola.

But De Bruyne says City are determined to continue adding to their trophy cabinet.

Guardiola’s charges have one hand on the Premier League trophy courtesy of a 13-point lead, as well as another game in hand, over rivals Manchester United.

And the style and swagger with which they have dominated the English top-flight stands them among the favourites in Europe too, with their place in the Champions League quarter-finals all but confirmed after a 4-0 last-16 first leg win over Basel.

“It is very nice to win but it is just the beginning, we still have a lot to play for and Thursday is another game,” De Bruyne said, with City taking on Arsenal again but in the league.

“It is very nice to already have a title in the bag. We have had a wonderful season until now and I think we fully deserved it.

“Now we have to go on and try to win the Premier League and do well in the Champions League.”

Guardiola has overseen a huge overhaul in personnel at City since his arrival in the summer of 2015, spending more than £450 million on new signings since taking over at the Etihad Stadium.

But it was a trio of City’s longest-serving players – Aguero, Kompany and Silva, who have made a combined 950 City appearances – who inspired their success at the weekend.

And De Bruyne enthused about the old guard’s impact.

He declared: “I think they help the younger lads to focus on what they have to do.

“Obviously they have been at the club so, so long so everybody knows their value.

“It was a very good performance from the team and it was nice to win this one.

“A lot of our young players didn’t win a lot in their career. So it will help them to get the experience of playing this game, the way you need to handle it, the way you need to end it. It will help them in the end.”
