Desperate India and Pakistan residents FLEE homes as fears of World War Three intensify

Exchanges of fire in the Uri sector between the Asian nations has hit a 15 year high with fears that relative peace in the region could be over.

Nasir Ahmad Naqash, deputy commissioner of northern Baramulla district, said: “More than 1,000 villagers have fled their homes due to the shelling.

“Many people have been provided shelter in the campus by the government while others have gone to live with their relatives.”

Officials say that more than 15 people, including civilians, have been killed in the Uri sector as well as houses being damaged.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has accused India of killing 12 people in the area.

Describing the increasing violence Shahid Iqbal Chowdhary, a Senior Administration Official, from the border town of Rajouri, said: “The ceasefire violations have continued since May last year, but there was a sudden rise from January this year.

“More than 600 people continue to remain in camps due to the fear.”

One man from the village of Churunda has described how the intense shelling led him to leave his home on Saturday.

Nazir Ahmad, 40 is now homeless and sleeping in a state-run secondary school with his family.

He said: “On Saturday, we heard the announcement from the other side asking civilians to shift to safer places.

“It panicked everyone and most of the villagers left their homes.

“This is for the first time in many years that the shelling has intensified.”

Ghulam Nabi, another resident living in the Uri sector, has pleaded to the two sides to let civilians caught in the line of fire clear the area.

He said: “We appeal government to provide us land in some safer places.

“We don’t want to live among the shells and bullets that have put our lives in danger.”

The reports of more than a thousand people being forced to leave the Uri sector comes just weeks after India claimed it had been forced to evacuate “over 36,000” people from other parts along its border.

The United Nations have encouraged the pair to take part in talks in a desperate hope the violence on the border can be de-escalated.

There are concerns the daily skirmishes could turn into a full war.
